Having been to all the Winter Classics I can tell you they are fantastic ...

Then I sat in Buffalo for the first Classic, ...

Ek, you do know that the first winter classic was in Edmonton right? It was called the heritage game then, but it was the first of what is now known as the Winter Classic.

@FriedgeHNIC's 30 Thoughts he says the teams driving the lockout are BOS, ANA, CLB, FLA, NYI, PHX, STL, WSH and DAL.

we could do without most of those teams.....lets just move forward without them

The NHL Winter Classic is an annual event held by the National Hockey League (NHL) on or around New Year's Day in which a regular-season hockey game is played outdoors, in an area hosted by an NHL team. The first outdoor NHL game was the Heritage outdoor game held in Edmonton in 2003 between Edmonton and Montreal. It became an annual event in 2008. After featuring only American teams for its first five years, the 2013 NHL Winter Classic will feature its first Canadian team, as the Toronto Maple Leafs play against the Detroit Red Wings. The first Winter Classic was held in 2008.

Winter Classic and Heritage Classic are separate NHL events.

I still think of it as the first...

and on a blog discussing being in attendance for pretty much every single significant hockey game played since the dawn of time, I think it should be mentioned.

I don't know about all you guys but they do this, and the season is over. I will not be a part of this anymore. The fantasy is over, I just saw the mascots smoking in the parking lot. Just a lot of guys in suits charging obscene amounts for "the love of the game"... done.

I remember one where the puck was getting caught up in "snow" on the ice. That seemed like magic to my young impressionable self.

As I am writing this the news is breaking that NY City Mayor Bloomberg is about to ban passenger cars from entering NY City. Wow. How about some frigging compassion and perspective from the owners and players. We could REALLY us a little hockey right about now.

Could you please stop linking the lockout to the devastation in New York and elsewhere?

It's grossly inappropriate.

The Heritage Classic is more of a Canadian thing. The Winter Classic has been so Americanized. It's Bettman's way of promoting Hockey in the United States. During the Winter Classic NBC even called it "Hockey Day In America". This is why I like to call it a separate event from the Heritage Classic. Although I do agree that the Winter Classic is a progression from the Heritage Classic, I don't think of it as the first "Winter Classic".

The Heritage Classic could probably go every year between two Canadian teams but Bettman does not really seem to like it as it takes away from the Winter Classic imo. The 2011 Heritage Classic almost didn't happen but it of course led to a sold out crowd in Calgary. A Classic in any of the Canadian cities (given they have sufficiently large stadiums) would yield great outdoor games.

But then there's Bettman. There's no need to promote Hockey in Canada is there

Loved the Montreal/Edmonton game. Bitter cold, brittle ice.

But every year the game gets worse. Bad ice, bad hockey, I choose to longer watch. Why would we celebrate ugly hockey?

Isn't he actually one of the more militant owners.

Regardless of who the main forces are behind this, the rest of the owners are not too far behind. I think they would be more interested in making a deal if Fehr were not involved.
